چکیده

We study light absorption by weakly rough metal surfaces with the roughness amplitude and correlation length smaller than skin depth in metal. develop a systematic perturbative approach for calculation of absorptance such systems find that roughness-related variations are determined an interplay between several system parameters which can result, particular, greater amplitudes. show that, small-scale roughness, mainly caused roughness-induced increase effective volume surface layer, incident is predominantly absorbed. argue fluctuations different samples, even though not related to any electron scattering processes, appear as sample-to-sample Drude rate reported recent measurements dielectric function.

The absorption of light by rough metal surfaces—A three-dimensional ray-tracing analysis

The laser absorptance of rough surfaces has been investigated by using Monte Carlo simulations based on three-dimensional 3D ray tracing. The influence of multiple scattering, shadowing, and the Fresnel-equation based angle dependence is discussed. The 3D results are compared to previously published results from a two-dimensional ray-tracing analysis and the different applications of the two mo...

Interband Light Absorption at a Rough Interface

Light absorption at the boundary of indirect-band-gap and direct-forbidden gap semiconductors is analyzed. It is found that the possibility of the electron momentum nonconservation at the interface leads to essential enhancement of absorption in porous and microcrystalline semiconductors. The effect is more pronounced at a rough boundary due to enlargement of the share of the interface atoms. T...

Characterization of random rough surfaces by in-plane light scattering

The reciprocal space structures of Si backside rough surfaces were studied using an in-plane light scattering technique. A diode array detector was used to collect the angular distribution of the scattered intensity. The diffraction profiles are interpreted based on the theory of diffraction from a self-affine rough surface. Roughness parameters such as interface width, lateral correlation leng...

Fluorescence quenching in molecules near rough metal surfaces

A classical electrodynamic near field calculation for the interaction of a Drude oscillator molecular dipole with a rough metal surface is presented. Effects of electromagnetic coupling between surface bumps (assumed to be prolate hemispheroids) and the bulk metal are included. Fluorescence lifetimes are found to be two to four orders of magnitude smaller than those predicted for a flat plane i...

Nonlinear optical phenomena on rough surfaces of metal thin films

Nonlinear optical phenomena on rough self-affine metal surfaces are theoretically studied. Placing nonlinearly polarizable molecules on such surfaces results in strong enhancement of optical nonlinearities. A quasistatic approximation is used to calculate local-enhancement factors for the second and third harmonic generation, degenerate four-wave mixing, and nonlinear Kerr effect. The calculati...
